Max Verstappen won his first race of the F1 season after battling Lando Norris at the Japanese Grand Prix, with both drivers showing strong pace throughout the weekend. Norris had been the standout driver early in the season, with McLaren winning the first two races, one each for Norris and Oscar Piastri. However, Verstappen shocked everyone with a brilliant qualifying lap to secure pole position, setting the stage for an interesting race at Suzuka. The drama came during the pit stop phase, where Norris drove over the grass on Verstappen's inside, leading to accusations and tension over the radio. Replays suggested Verstappen didn't alter his line, and the stewards reviewed the incident, finding no wrongdoing, allowing Verstappen to maintain his lead. Verstappen held off Norris after the pit stops, securing the win to reduce his championship deficit to just one point. Aside from the lead battle, the race was largely uneventful, with Lewis Hamilton passing Isack Hadjar to finish in seventh, the only change in the top 10. Oscar Piastri finished third, ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli struggling to make any progress for Mercedes in the race. Alex Albon and Ollie Bearman rounded out the top 10, in a race at Suzuka that saw minimal on-track action aside from a few overtakes. Many drivers called the race “boring,” raising concerns about Suzuka's future as a key F1 venue, with possible changes being discussed for the 2026 season.
