Many of us think that cutting a moldy piece off of our fruit or vegetables makes them safe to eat, but according to new research, this may not be true. The study, published in the BfR scientific journal, asked 1,000 people about their views on and handling of mold toxins. Mold toxins are poisonous substances that some molds release, and they can show up in everyday foods such as bread, fruit, spices, and cheese. Results of the study showed that around 95.5% of respondents said they throw away moldy yogurt or meat almost every time. On the other hand, roughly 30.6% of respondents said they typically cut off the moldy section of their fruit and vegetables and eat the rest. In water-rich foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, mold toxins don't always stay where the mold is growing, so cutting off the moldy piece doesn't necessarily make the food safe to eat. For this reason, researchers of the study recommend throwing those foods out entirely if they become moldy, rather than just trimming them.
