When your kids head back to school and settle into a more structured routine, it's important to make sure their bedtime routine follows suit. If your child's bedtime has shifted later over the summer break, gradually move it earlier by about 15 minutes at a time until they're back to their usual schedule. About a week before your child starts school, gradually return to a regular bedtime and wake-up time so they have time to adjust. Letting your child play outside can help improve their sleep, but as school approaches, call them inside a little earlier so they aren't overstimulated at bedtime. Sleep experts recommend turning off all screens at least an hour before bedtime, as exposure to blue light can negatively affect your child's sleep. Make sure your child avoids sugary drinks, energy drinks, chocolate, and other foods containing stimulants in the hours before bedtime. A consistent bedtime routine, such as having a warm bath or shower before bed, can help your child readjust to a regular schedule and sleep better.
