Labour Day is a US holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September.
It is designed to honor the American Labour movement and acknowledge the contributions of workers to society.
The holiday began on September 5, 1882, when workers held a parade to demand better working conditions.
Former President Grover Cleveland made it an official holiday on June 28, 1894.
Labour Day now also unofficially marks the end of the summer season.
During the early 20th century, it was a popular tradition to stop wearing white after Labour Day.
Wealthy elites would return to work after their summer holidays, when lighter-colored clothing was more commonly worn.
