Many people enjoy a refreshing soda every day, but according to a new study, this habit may be linked to an increased risk of developing cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around 63% of US adults report drinking one or more sugar-sweetened beverages a day. A recent study published in Gastro Hep Advances found that people who consume sugar-sweetened beverages daily may face a higher risk of developing gastric cancer. In the study, sugar-sweetened beverages were defined as carbonated beverages, punch, lemonade, and sports drinks. Researchers gathered diet, lifestyle, and health data from 112,284 participants. Over the course of the study, 278 participants developed gastric cancer. The findings showed that those who consumed at least one sugar-sweetened beverage a day had a higher risk of developing the disease than those who drank less than one a month. However, the study noted one important distinction: artificially sweetened beverages were not associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer.
