Gargling with salt water is a traditional home remedy that is still a popular choice for managing minor winter ailments.  While most viral sore throats simply need time to heal, this rinse provides relief by drawing fluid out of swollen tissues to reduce inflammation. Salt water doesn't just soothe pain; it also helps decrease the level of bacteria and viruses in the mouth and helps to thin stubborn mucus.  To prepare the solution at home, dissolve half a teaspoon of salt into one cup of warm water.  For the best results, gargle the mixture at the back of your throat for 10 to 15 seconds before spitting it out. You can repeat this process up to three times a day.  This natural remedy is also useful for those suffering from allergies, sinus infections, or even recovering from oral surgery.  However, a salt water solution should never be swallowed and it's not recommended for children under the age of six.  While it may not be a total cure, this affordable remedy is a scientifically supported way to promote healing and ease seasonal discomfort.
