Iceland has once again been named the most peaceful country in the world, topping the 2025 Global Peace Index.  Known for its volcanoes, hot springs and scenery, the Nordic nation also ranks third on the World Happiness Report.  Iceland remains one of the most sought-after travel destinations in the Northern Hemisphere. Ireland, New Zealand, Austria and Switzerland complete the top five. The index, produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace, measures safety, conflict and militarization across 163 states.  The report highlights the importance of “Positive Peace”,  institutions and attitudes that foster stability, economic growth and resilience. Globally, peace has deteriorated since the index launched in 2008, with the gap between the most and least peaceful nations widening.  Russia now ranks last, just below Ukraine, while the United States ranks at No. 128, far behind many developing nations, due largely to its militarization.  France is the most militarized in Western Europe, while South America showed the biggest improvements, especially in Peru and Argentina.  In Africa, Mauritius, Botswana and Namibia lead the way.
