A new study shows that Alaska is the most stressed state in America, proving that where you live can seriously affect your mental health. Researchers at Anidjar & Levine looked at safety, suicide rates, cost of living, pollution, and poverty to rank all 50 states. Alaska came in highest with a score of 84.50, fueled by a suicide rate three times the national average and living costs far above normal. New Mexico followed at 81.62, struggling with high crime, deep poverty, and poor environmental conditions. Louisiana ranked third with 70.20, where nearly one in eleven residents lives in extreme poverty. Other high-stress states include Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, Kentucky, Arkansas, Washington, and Hawaii. Experts say these pressures often spill over into health and legal problems for residents. On the flip side, Massachusetts ranked as the least stressed state with a score of 24.90. New Jersey and New Hampshire also made the calmest list, thanks to safer communities and better access to mental health support.
